Air Quality Planning
The WPCOG acts as the lead planning agency addressing air quality issues in the Unifour. The Unifour Air Quality Committee (UAQC) is a local group formed through the COG to help coordinate air quality planning activities in the four county area. Under the direction of WPCOG staff, the UAQC has been instrumental in developing a regional air quality program examining two major pollutants, ground level ozone and fine particulate matter. The Unifour Early Action Compact (EAC), an agreement between ten local Unifour governments, the N.C. Division of Air Quality (NCDAQ) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), was developed to provide practical local measures to address ozone pollution. Through air awareness and ozone action campaigns, the group is instrumental in promoting a better quality of life for this area’s residents. The ten EAC members are also represented on the Unifour Air Quality Oversight Committee (UAQOC), whose membership consists of elected officials. The WPCOG and UAQC, and UAQOC are dedicated to helping this area comply with the national health-based air quality standards.
