Lower Creek Watershed Restoration and Preservation
The North Carolina Ecosystem Enhancement Program (EEP) is the lead agency in this project. EEP has two main goals. One goal is to mitigate for impacts to streams, wetlands, and riparian areas by NC DOT and other development projects on a watershed level. The second goal is to enhance the natural resources of North Carolina by addressing watershed needs.
EEP is promoting local watershed planning in several watersheds across the state. Generally, the agency focuses its efforts on relatively small watersheds (20 to 100 mi2). These projects involve assessing watershed problems and opportunities utilizing computer GIS analysis and mapping and field-based activities. With the assistance of local stakeholders, a watershed plan is developed to address ecological and community concerns.
The Lower Creek subbasin has been targeted for restoration activities for several reasons. First, the state needed to select a subbasin within the Catawba River basin for NC Department of Transportation mitigation projects. Secondly, a considerable amount of work has already occurred within the watershed. Lower Creek and several of its tributaries already appear on the state’s current 303(d) list of impaired waters. Lastly, strong local support exists for improving conditions within the watershed.
