The Western Piedmont Council of Governments (WPCOG) is currently seeking energetic, self-motivated, and detail oriented candidates for the position of Data Technician. The WPCOG is an innovative and forward-thinking organization dedicated to addressing planning issues for the region. Situated in the beautiful rolling hills and mountains of western North Carolina, with ample opportunities for recreation, shopping and dining abounding in the region, makes the area an ideal place to call home. The region contains great natural resources from the slopes of Grandfather Mountain to five major lakes along the Catawba River. The region contains a population of about 365,000 in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba counties.
The position prepares, conducts, analyses and participates in the collection and organization of data sets through field work collection or through manipulation of existing data sets relating to the Census, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), air and water quality, K-12 school enrollment and related data, zoning and planning, transportation, various local government infrastructures, and other data sets such as building stocks and permits, demographic, economic, employment, fiscal data, healthcare, surveys and similar data sets within the context of the COG region. The position analyzes relevant data sets collected, manipulated or corrected to produce geographic datasets, statistics, reports and maps using several COG GIS software and basic office software for either members, for other COG staff or others. Performs research and data analysis on a variety of projects including but not limited to local government maintained GIS systems, census and population, air quality, school demography and forecasting, growth demography and forecasting, education and health care data, transportation, economic growth, industry and business data sets and forecasting, other environmental issues and a variety of other on-going or special projects.
Bachelor’s degree in demography, statistics, geography, planning or related field required. At least two years’ experience as a data analyst and/or a Master’s degree in demography, statistics, geography, planning or related field preferred. Ability to effectively communicate with general public, professional staff and elected/appointed officials in oral/written forms required. GIS knowledge preferred.
The starting salary is $35,000 to $40,000 and a full benefits package is provided. WPCOG participates in the N.C. Local Government Retirement System.
